Join the Movement
Join The Freedom Initiative for a two day advocacy on capital hill. The event aims to organize the Egyptian diaspora in the US in Washington DC to engage with lawmakers and officials on Human rights and democratic governance issues in Egypt.
Event Timing: March 24 - March 25, 2019
Event Location: Washington D.C.
WHAT ARE WE DOING FOR 2 DAYS?
Day 1: We will conduct advocacy workshops for the participants in partnership with U.S. Foreign policy on Egypt experts and advocates.
Day 2: We will participate in an advocacy day with different avenues of government. We will be visiting the State Department for briefings, partaking in a congressional reception, and constituents will meet with their elected officials.
WHAT ISSUES WILL YOU BE ADVOCATING FOR?
We will be advocating for the betterment of the Human Rights conditions in Egypt and to advocate against the proposed constitutional amendments that severely undermine judiciary independence and invite military intervention to unseat elected presidents. The advocacy day will be held prior to the referendum on the constitutional amendments, and we want to ensure that the U.S. continues to use its influence with the Egyptian government to uphold the democratic principle of peaceful transfer of power.
The issues we plan on pressing are mainly focused on human rights and democratic governance lurching into a black hole. The asks will be to join bipartisan statements/resolutions on the Egyptian elections, and continue to withhold and condition US aid to Egypt on the improvement of human rights situation.
Registration and room and board will be covered.
